VIDEO TESTIMONIES
A word from the people affected by Mozambique LNG Project
Mozambique LNG project was given rights to 6,625 ha of land on the Afungi Peninsula for its onshore processing plant and related infrastructure. Communities living in the area were required to relocate, and were promised compensation in accordance with an agreement signed.
In April 2021, the project was suspended following a violent insurgent attack on the nearby Palma town, and all activities were halted, including resettlement. In October 2024 the project remains officially suspended but resettlement activities are reported to have resumed in 2022.
In a written response to questions submitted at its May 2024 AGM, TotalEnergies stated:
-
- “…100% of the families impacted by the DUAT are already compensated”
- “100% of people which have been resettled in Quitunda have been compensated including for their land….”
- “…the project has completed the allocation of agricultural land plots to all households resettled in Quitunda…”
- More that 4,700 agreements were paid.
In July 2024 a number of people whose households are affected by the project provided testimonials that revealed a very large number of unresolved resettlement and compensation problems. One man, Mr Sulmagy Ibrahimo, has since passed away. Many are unable to rebuild their lives. In this set of testimonials, we hear from 11 people from different affected communities.
DISPLACEMENT
BEFORE
In 2018, JA! staff met with community members living in the village of Milamba, in Cabo Delgado.
Milamba was one of the villages on the land where Anadarko planned to build the Afungi LNG Park (the construction was taken over by Total in 2019). It was a village a few metres from the beach, sustained by fishing and farming.
These are videos of community members from Milamba taken before they were forced to leave their homes, where they explain their experience of the consultation process and their fears.
AFTER
In 2020, JA! met those same community members, who were now displaced from Milamba, a village that no longer exists.
Here they tell of what happened to them during the displacement, how their lives have changed and the impacts they have faced in the space of a mere two years.
ATTACKS
