CAMPAIGN
The gas industry is causing irreversible devastation globally, and in Mozambique, and in the northernmost province of Cabo Delgado, communities are starving, displaced and landless, even before any gas has been extracted. The gas industry is also destroying Nampula Province and Inhambane Province, and we will be providing more information about this soon.

The transnational fossil fuel corporations, contractors, private and public financiers, purchasers and risk consultancies along with the government of Mozambique are turning the wheels of this industry. All are complicit. The industry and the governments who will benefit from the gas boast of the economic and social ‘development’ it will bring to Mozambique. But the promises they have made to Mozambique’s communities have not been fulfilled and the impacts far outstrip the present and future benefits.
The gas industry has fueled a violent conflict in Cabo Delgado between insurgents, the Mozambican defense force, the Southern African Development Community army and Rwandan military, and foreign private security companies – a conflict that has killed many thousands of people and created 800 000 refugees.
Mozambique is one of the countries most vulnerable to the ravages of climate change, and gas is a massive contributor to the climate crisis while also damaging and polluting the local environment. The economic impact of the industry is disastrous, pushing an already poor country even further into debt.
In the Campaign, we work closely with affected communities on the ground, and witness their suffering, how they are becoming further disenfranchised and forced deeper into poverty by these gas projects. It is crucial that we stop the gas industry now, and not let corporate impunity, fossil fuel giants, wealthy states and corrupt politicians benefit from gas at the expense of the lives and wellbeing of the Mozambican people.
